Sanriku Railway is Japan’s longest railway operated in a public-private partnership. It started running in 1984. At the time, there were the North Rias Line and the South Rias Line. Following JR Yamada Line’s transfer between Miyako and Kamaishi, which had been interrupted by the Great East Japan Earthquake, it began to operate as a rias line in 2019.

It became well-known as the stage of the serial TV drama “Amachan.” You can enjoy a kotatsu train, retro-train, and earthquake study train, all slowly moving so that you can admire the many spectacular views of the ria coast.
